Rethinking Fate or ‘Maktub’ in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist through Taoism

Brazilian author Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist is believed to be a work that inspires readers reflect upon their dreams and pursue them. While it matter of discussion as what makes the novel so, one apparent reasons compelling presence philosophical ideas like Taoism. However, Taoism—the idea going with universe’s “flow” - contradicts use “fate” or “Maktub” present in same work. Maktub stands for pre-determined destiny, this research paper closely analyses how Taoist principles contradict author’s concept fate destiny through actions dialogues notable characters.
